When the Jacobsons hired us to give their first floor a refresh, we had our first big challenging makeover on our hands because we weren’t starting from scratch as we’d been able to do on both the Le/Winkeler’s and the Clemmens’ homes. We weren’t buying furniture but using what they had to decorate around/with. We were tasked with creating something neutral that still incorporated much of what hey had (including some of their own accessories) and yet give it a fresh update and more personality.
What my decorating partner Jill Martin and I did was to first establish that we needed to stick to a masculine theme that would allow us to use a lot of the military and guys’ guy stuff that they had from their family history in the USMC and Navy and their dining room is a pool room, which is the first thing you see. Switching from dated valances to panels gave the spaces the biggest refresh throughout the space as well as nice wall collages and de-cluttering the bookcase niches by using less but having each make more of an impact. View the video for the complete before and afters.
We did soften up the kitchen and master bedroom’s palette for more of a nature/botanical theme and added a splash of fun with the vintage dog poster Jill found at an antique booth, which I mod podged on to a red open frame.
If you like the space, we hope you’ll share our post. Next week we’ll be sharing a file room makeover for Sweet Law in Automobile Alley.
Love the space you’re in,
Malena & Jill
