While Oklahoma isn’t short on spaces to get away for the summer, it can be tough to find a place that truly feels like a quiet, private retreat. Not anymore. The Canebrake, a boutique resort in Wagoner, OK founded by Sam and Lisa Bracken, is a peaceful spot to “rejuvenate, regroup and relax” and they’ve been rewarded for it, too – being named winner of the 2013 Red Bud Award for Outstanding Lodging Property and the 2013 Oklahoma Living Magazine “Best Chef Award.”
The intimate setting is nestled next to Ft. Gibson lake and guests can take a nature walk alongside the lake, take yoga in the Yoga Barn, enjoy spa services or take advantage of the bonfire after a delicious gourmet meal in their Kitchen.
Upon check-in, we were offered complimentary champagne while we waited to be taken by golf cart to our room. A great way to kick things off, right?
Guests are taken from the lobby to the cabins by golf cart making the stay for guests much quieter without the sound of cars and lights coming in and out of the lodging area.
The concierge Kirt had told us that he’d start a bonfire for us that evening at nightfall, and sure enough the fire was roaring and waiting for us. With one other person at the campfire, it made for a peaceful night made even better by the huge nearly full moon behind us. The Canebrake is a great excuse to get out to Green Country, whether for romantic getaway, a girls’ weekend or work retreat.
The last thing we saw as we exited the property was a family of armadillos. You don’t get that in the big city.
