What’s 93,000 square feet and let’s you watch football, basketball and concerts in one venue? Introducing the newly completed event center at Southwestern Oklahoma Statue University in Weatherford. The beautiful facility is so functional it’s hard not to come up with a use for it. From conferences to parties to tournaments to an April show with Bill Cosby, the Pioneer Cellular Event Center is truly a shining spot on my beloved Western Oklahoma.
For those readers who haven’t traveled westward, we hope to introduce you to many treasures, big and small. This one may likely be the biggest. Western Oklahoma is comprised of mostly small towns and Weatherford being home to a university of about 5,000 students makes it a smart spot for an event center that includes a basketball court/concert floor as well as a courtyard entrance and concessions for football games. Upstairs, you get VIP seating to watch it all. Pretty brilliant.
I took a tour of the facility a couple of weeks ago scouting locations for an upcoming advertising campaign for the university, which I do every two years. While I’d seen the sketches, seeing the center in person really did blow my mind. I guarantee a lot of great memories will be made there.
Here’s a quick snapshot tour (using my iPhone) so I’ll keep the photos small, but I’ll return in April with my videocamera to get some footage to share. Below the pics, see the animated tour.
It’s a great example of a public/private partnership that can benefit not only the university and city, but the whole region. The facility was funded by a tax as well as paid for by the university and its students.
